Job Description

Under the overall supervision of the Sr Operations Officer (Transit Centre), the Project Officer (NFIs and Distribution), and the direct supervision of the Senior Project Assistant (NFIs and Distribution), the incumbent will be responsible for performing the following tasks:

Responsibilities

  1. Participate in conducting and analysing assessments and surveys of sites, collecting information on overall services available.
  2. Participate in the distribution site management, verification of beneficiaries as required, and in coordination with the NFI coordinator.
  3. Contribute to distributions as and when required to evacuees, migrants, and other individuals selected for assistance under IOM’s various assistance programs, if and when required.
  4. Support in implementing hygiene promotion activities such as raising awareness of good hygiene practices, menstrual hygiene management for women and girls, and proper/appropriate use of NFIs and SFIs distributed. 
  5. Participate in community engagement and community participation sessions/events/activities organized for evacuees, migrants and other individuals. 
  6. Support in planning and scheduling the distribution of Non-food and food items.
  7. As necessary, support other teams with assessments, including the preparation of the assessment tools and focus group sheets and post-distribution monitoring activities.
  8. Assist in organizing and receiving the Items in the warehouse.
  9. Assist IOM and partner staff in communicating with Afghan evacuees and vice versa by providing direct bilateral and/or multilateral interpretation services between Dari and/or Pashto and English during activities such as distribution of Non-Food Items and Supplementary food items, workshops, individual discussions, and recreational or educational activities.
  10. Accompany individuals to appointments or meetings where necessary (e.g. medical visits) and provide interpretation.
  11. Provide informal written translation services from English into Dari or Pashto (and vice versa), often working to a tight deadline with high standards of accuracy.
  12. Perform other similar duties that may be assigned.

Qualifications

Education
  • University degree in Development Studies, Supply Chain, Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, Management or a related field from an accredited academic institution with at least three years of relevant professional experience.
  • Completed High School degree from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
 
Experience
  • Excellent knowledge and skills in translation and interpreting between the target languages;
  • Experience working for the United Nations, an official mission, non-governmental organization, or relevant government department a distinct advantage.
  • Experience working with humanitarian response particularly project implementation, operations, coordination, transportation, Distribution and general administrative duties.
Skills
  • Strong organizational, facilitation, communication, writing and presentations skills;
  • Ability to draft clearly and concisely reports.
  • Good knowledge of Word, Excel and Internet.
  • Strong work ethics and commitment to humanitarian principles.
  • Ability to work under time constraints and deadlines in challenging settings.
  • Capacity to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from various cultures and professional background.
Languages

REQUIRED

For this position, fluency in English, Dari, and Pashto is required (oral and written).

DESIRABLE

Working knowledge of Arabic.

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
