Mission and objectives

UNAIDS is leading the global effort to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. UNAIDS is a problem-solver. It places people living with HIV and people affected by the virus at the decision-making table and at the centre of designing, delivering and monitoring the AIDS response. It charts paths for countries and communities to get on the Fast-Track to ending AIDS and is a bold advocate for addressing the legal and policy barriers to the AIDS response. UNAIDS provides the strategic direction, advocacy, coordination and technical support needed to catalyse and connect leadership from governments, the private sector and communities to deliver life-saving HIV services. Without UNAIDS, there would be no strategic vision for the AIDS response. UNAIDS generates strategic information and analysis that increases the understanding of the state of the AIDS epidemic and progress made at the local, national, regional and global levels. It leads the world’s most extensive data collection on HIV epidemiology, programme coverage and finance and publishes the most authoritative and up-to-date information on the HIV epidemic—vital for an effective AIDS response. UNAIDS produces data for impact—no major report, speech or policy initiative on HIV has been launched or made without referring to data collected and released by UNAIDS.

Context

This volunteering opportunity is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Tunisia in the framework of the initiative launched in partnership with UNV in December 2023 to foster youth and disability inclusion through meaningful and impactful volunteering assignments with the United Nations between 2024 and 2026. This assignment is part of UNV’s disability inclusion strategy. UNV seeks to 1) provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to serve as UN Volunteers 2) enable UN part-ners to expand diversity and inclusion of persons with disabilities in their workforce worldwide 3) build a talent pipeline of qualified professionals with disabilities who can contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at national and global levels, with focus on national capacity. The response to HIV/AIDS must be gender-transformative, rights-based and people-centered. This includes people living with HIV, key populations (populations most vulnerable and exposed to HIV/AIDS. In Tunisia, key populations are men who have sex with men, injecting drug users , sex workers and transgender people) and young people (including adolescent girls and young women). UNAIDS advocates and supports the country to adopt a community-led, inclusive approach that promotes societal catalysts. The country office works with its governmental, non-governmental, community and technical and financial partners to remove barriers related to human rights and gender inequalities. The country office advocates for greater political commitment and contributes to the generation of evidence that sheds light on the inequalities driving the epidemics of HIV and other comorbidities and supports the development and implementation implementation of strategic frameworks responding to them.
