Mission and objectives

IOM began its operations in Thailand in 1975, assisting the resettlement of Indo-Chinese refugees to countries offering them permanent residence. With the Kingdom of Thailand joining IOM as a member state in 1986, the organization's cooperation with the Royal Thai Government has expanded to cover all aspects of migration affecting the Kingdom and its neighbours, including labour migration, migration health, counter trafficking, emergency and post crisis, institution building, border management, security and law enforcement. Today, IOM has a strong presence in Thailand with over 350 personnel working on more than 50 active projects in eleven locations across the country. The IOM Mission in Thailand has a main office in central Bangkok, four sub offices and six other project offices in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Mae Sariang, Mae Sot and Samut Prakarn.

Context

The Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime is a regional forum that supports collaboration, dialogue and policy development relating to irregular migration in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond – bringing together 45 Member States and four Member Organisations – as well as 18 Observer States and nine Observer Organisations. The Regional Support Office of the Bali Process (RSO) was established in 2012 to provide technical support to Bali Process Members and to strengthen cooperation on refugee protection and international migration, including human trafficking, people smuggling and transnational crime. The RSO Alumni Network is a platform for government officials, law enforcement officers, border and immigration officials, maritime officers, and other practitioners who have participated in RSO-led training and capacity-building activities. Through this platform, members can engage in professional networking, share knowledge, and exchange resources aimed at addressing these critical issues. By supporting this assignment, the Online Volunteer will have the chance to gain insights into the role of graphic design in intergovernmental and cooperation contexts and contribute to addressing irregular migration and trafficking in persons through their creative talents.
