Context

This volunteering opportunity is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Tunisia in the framework of the initiative launched in partnership with UNV in December 2023 to foster youth and disability inclusion through meaningful and impactful volunteering assignments with the United Nations between 2024 and 2026. The UN Volunteer will serve as a Junior Urban Architect within the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure in Tunis. The Ministry is committed to promoting sustainable urban development and enhancing the quality of built environments in urban areas across Tunisia.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of M. Abderrazak Chiha, Director of Urbanism and the delegated representative of UNHABITAT, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: 1. Contribute to the development and implementation of urban planning policies, strategies, and guidelines to improve the functionality, aesthetics, and resilience of urban environments. 2. Provide architectural knowledge and support; 3. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including urban planners, engineers, landscape architects, and environmental specialists, to integrate architectural considerations into comprehensive urban planning and design solutions. 4. Help conduct site assessments and feasibility studies to identify opportunities and constraints for urban development projects. 5. Utilize architectural software and visualization tools to help develop conceptual designs, master plans, and architectural drawings for urban development projects, ensuring compliance with relevant building codes, regulations, and standards. 6. Support capacity-building initiatives and training workshops for Ministry staff and local professionals on urban design principles, architectural techniques, and best practices. 7. Contribute to the documentation and dissemination of successful urban design projects and case studies to promote knowledge sharing and replication in other urban contexts.
