Associate Legal Officer



1.    Organizational Context


(a)  Organizational Setting

The position is located in the IP Disputes Management Section of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center which is a resource center for the resolution of intellectual property disputes between private parties through methods other than court litigation. The Center's areas of activity are covered by three Sections\: the IP Disputes Management Section, the Internet Dispute Resolution Section and the Information and External Relations Section.


(b)  Purpose Statement

The IP Disputes Management Section is responsible for the administration of mediation and arbitration cases filed with the Center and WIPO Mediation, Arbitration, Expedited Arbitration, and Expert Determination and various related aspects of the development and promotion of WIPO alternative dispute resolution.  The incumbent contributes to this legal and organizational work of the Center by producing well defined aspects or segments of work products expected from the team.


(c)  Reporting Lines

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Deputy Director and Head of the IP Disputes Management Section.



2.    Duties and Responsibilities


The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:


a)    Assist in the administration of mediation, arbitration and expert determination cases filed with the Center.

b)    Prepare background materials, reports and other documents used to assist with the production of materials on WIPO alternative dispute resolution for conferences and training programs.  Assist in the promotion of such events and maintain contact with participants.

c)    Conduct research, and select and analyze relevant legal materials from identified sources in relation to new Center-supported dispute resolution policies tailored to local and regional needs.

d)     Assist with the preparation of draft procedural guidance in relation to WIPO alternative dispute resolution as instructed.

e)    Perform other related duties as required.



3.     Requirements





First-level university degree in law.


First-level university degree including studies in intellectual property and/or alternative dispute resolution. An advanced university degree may be accepted in lieu of two years of experience.





At least 6 months relevant professional experience, including experience in intellectual property law or alternative dispute resolution in a law firm and/or department or agency.





Excellent (written and spoken) knowledge of English.


Ability to work in other WIPO languages.

Annual salary\:


Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the November 2016 rate of 84.7%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations (not applicable for the External Offices).

Additional Information


Temporary appointments are renewable, subject to continuing needs, availability of budget and satisfactory performance with a maximum cumulative length of two years.
