Traineeship on Migration –Protection of the Civilian Population Unit

Purpose of the Position

The post holder is an active member of the Protection of the Civilian Population Unit, which acts as a pool of specialists within the Central Tracing Agency and Protection Division. He/she assists the Advisors on Migration Issues in the provision of advice and guidance to ICRC's protection operations in the field.

Specific responsibilities and tasks

  • Undertaking background research into policy and practice of the ICRC and other relevant organizations developing activities in favor of migrants. This background research is to be used to prepare guidance documents, working tools, articles and other publications.
  • Drafting and editing documents such as reports, statements, minutes of meeting, reference documents and tools as mentioned above for the Unit and/or for the Protection Division.
  • Assisting the Advisors on Migration Issues in planning, organizing and following-up on ICRC internal and external meetings, workshops, training courses, conferences and field missions in relation to migration, and participate in events as required.
  • Keeping abreast of migration developments in the media (and to some extent in the academic world) to contribute to the analysis of migration trends and their humanitarian consequences.
  • Revising and updating the existing "Migration Library" SharePoint database used by delegates in the field and staff at the Geneva Headquarters.
  • Assisting the members of the Unit in organizing and managing information. As an active member of the Unit taking part in its efforts to disseminate the Professional Standards for protection work with other humanitarian actors and UN agencies.
  • Undertaking any other tasks as required by the Protection Division.

Required qualifications, skills and experience

  • Master degree in international relations, international law, political or social sciences or equivalent, preferably with a specialization in migration
  • Previous experience with an NGO or an International Organization in the field of migration
  • Fluency in English, working proficiency in French, Spanish or Arabic an asset
  • Excellent analytical and research skills, good ability to search for data on the Internet and other relevant sources of public information
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and draft concise documents
  • Strong interest in migration and protection work
  • Good level of autonomy in managing work and meeting deadlines
  • Good organizational skills
  • Comfortable working in a team, good interpersonal and intercultural skills
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Maximum professional experience (including internships): 2 years

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience with a National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society
  • Experience with information management tools, such as Sharepoint or Lotus Notes

Competencies that the Associate is expected to acquire / reinforce during the year:

  • Excellent understanding of ICRC's principles, methodology and guidelines in protection work.
  • Good knowledge of present debates and publications related to migration and protection work among UN agencies, NGO's and academic institutions.

Conditions

Starting date: 11 February 2017 (please specify availability in the cover letter)
Location: Geneva
Contract: 12 month contract full-time, paid traineeship
