Data Protection Legal Advisor


Resident Position - 100% - Geneva

Purpose of the post

Following the adoption by the Directorate of the ICRC Rules on Personal Data Protection (the Rules) on 24 February 2015, the ICRC established a Data Protection Office to ensure the effective application of the Rules as well as the exercise of individuals' data protection rights.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Data Protection Legal Adviser assists the Head of Data Protection Office in the identification, planning, implementation, coordination and follow-up of the data protection activities of the ICRC, of the management and performance of the functions of the Data Protection Office as identified in the ICRC Rules and explanatory Handbook.

In particular, the Data Protection Legal Adviser is entrusted with the following tasks:

  • to devise, co-ordinate and implement the action plan for effective application of the Rules. This involves, in particular working closely with the most affected areas of operations and administration to bring their guidelines and policies on data management in line with the Rules;
  • to assist the Head of Data Protection Office with the monitoring of the implementation of the requirements related to data protection by design and by default, and data security;
  • to advise on the creation/update of privacy information notices for data subjects;
  • to assist the Head of Data Protection Office in advising on and ensuring that Data Protection Impact Assessments are correctly carried out by the responsible ICRC staff;
  • to assist the Head of Data Protection Office in the design and roll-out of an e-learning tool on personal data protection;
  • to carry out trainings for ICRC staff.

Lines of reporting

The Data Protection Legal Adviser reports to the Head of Data Protection Office, in the Communication and Information Management Department.

Education and experience required

  • Law degree, and M.A./LL.M.
  • Knowledge of Data Protection/Privacy law. Data Protection/Privacy Officer Certification would be an asset;
  • Experience in the humanitarian sector and/or within a recognized international organization is an asset. Previous experience of ICRC operations and/or HQ, notably in the field of data protection or protection would be a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with IT/data security issues is a strong asset;
  • Mastery of English and working knowledge of French.

Desired length of mission: Open ended contract - 4 year assignment.
