You will also be able to identify advocacy opportunities using UN Human Rights as well as other mechanisms, both in Geneva and New York, and know how to use these mechanisms to achieve AI’s goals.

The purpose of AI’s work with the UN and other intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) is to ensure that AI’s positions, concerns and recommendations are effectively communicated to IGO actors and are reflected in their actions and decisions.

You will have a deep knowledge of human rights priority issues, and a keen sense of the role of multilaterally-sourced norms and standards, advocacy action, diplomatic pressure, and UN accountability mechanisms, in protecting and promoting human rights as well as Human Rights institutions. You will also possess a deep knowledge and understanding of UN institutional processes and mandates on or related to key thematic issues. You will have extensive experience of IGO advocacy, and an excellent knowledge and experience of the UN, in particular its human rights bodies and mechanisms. Knowledge of other IGOs is also required, including those led by emerging global powers.

A main requirement is a solid understanding of the key thematic issues which AI has prioritized and extensive experience working with or at the UN advancing human rights.
