Senior Video Production Officer

The Video Unit sits within the Content Production Section of DER/CPIS, alongside the Photo Unit, the Social Media Unit and the Editing Unit. The Senior Video Production Officer heads the Video Unit and is responsible for ensuring the timely production, distribution and preservation of high-quality, high-impact video content for UNHCR's global audiences. As head of the Video Unit, he/she is thus responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the video studios in Geneva and Nairobi, including the ability to broadcast live television interviews from Geneva and to edit in both locations; the successful operation of the Orange Logic digital asset management system (Refugees Media: and related archival activities; and the supervision of relevant staff and consultants, including video production teams in various field locations worldwide. The incumbent must have extensive contacts with professional media, including broadcasters and online content editors, and liaise on a regular basis with journalists and documentary filmmakers. The post covers global requirements, requires extensive knowledge of UNHCR's operations around the world as well as its global strategic priorities, and involves significant travelling, often to challenging environments. The staff member works closely with colleagues in Geneva, Copenhagen and the field to produce accurate and compelling video and multimedia stories depicting UNHCR's work on behalf of people of concern.

- High-quality, high-impact videos and audio for UNHCR's global audiences are produced and distributed to news/media organizations in a timely manner.
- UNHCR video studio operates smoothly and ability to host live broadcast interviews with the High Commissioner or other key communicators is ensured.
- Preservation of multimedia assets (including raw video footage, edited video stories, shotlists, scripts and audio files) is secured in collaboration with the Photo Unit, Records & Archives Section, Digital Engagement Section and DIST and in keeping with industry best practice.

- Supervise UNHCR's global video operations and overall work of Communications & Public Information Service (CPIS) video studio.
- Develop and continuously update strategies for increasing UNHCR's profile through audio-visual production and dissemination, thus enhancing UNHCR overall global visibility in audio-visual broadcast media, including products tailored especially for web, social media and mobile platforms.
- Introduce audio production for distribution and placement on radio networks and in online formats such as podcasts and streaming audio.
- Identify, provide training to relevant staff and introduce new, cost-effective digital video technologies for the more rapid collection, editing and dissemination of footage from field operations worldwide.
- Develop and maintain a network of contacts with television news decision-makers, and international video suppliers. Research, write and edit scripts for TV news stories to be sent to broadcasters through various satellite feeds and for posting on UNHCR websites and social media platforms.
- Research, write, edit and distribute occasional short documentaries on UNHCR's work, or on specific refugee issues, to be sent to UNHCR offices, NGOs and media.
- Develop strategies for and oversee use of UNHCR video footage in various formats.
- Liaise with colleagues in house and with other UN agencies on technical, editorial and legal aspects of production of video materials to be used as training or educational tools.
- Supervise the progress of UNHCR's electronic content distribution and archiving systems to facilitate retrieval of video footage, photos and other digital assets for in-house and external use.
- Maintain a wide-ranging contact network with relevant mass media to direct their attention to those activities and achievements of UNHCR which are of interest to the public or concerned group.
- Assess the general reaction of the public to the work and specific activities of UNHCR on the basis of information gathered from the broadcast media.
- Evaluate the relative effectiveness of approaches chosen to reach the public and advise the Chief of Section and other senior officials of the needs for further coverage of specific programmes or topics.

- Hire and manage video and audio production consultants in headquarters and the field, including assigning and editing stories and approving expenditures for travel, equipment and other necessary goods and services.
- Authorize the distribution of videos to news/media organizations and the publication of videos through UNHCR's web and social media platforms.
- Authorize, within the limits of delegated authority, the purchase of equipment and services needed to support the operation of UNHCR video studios and field production.

- University degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications or relevant discipline with specific training in video and television production.  
- Minimum 12 years of previous job experience (10 years with advanced university degree) relevant to the function or in broadcast with wide-ranging knowledge of the profession of journalism ¿ particularly, but not exclusively, foreign correspondents and international media, with focus on television, broadcasting and digital channels. 
- Demonstrated television production abilities.
- Supervision of television crews in a field setting, including multi-camera shoots.
- Journalistic style script writing and editing abilities in English with professional interview experience.  
- Demonstrated experience in digital video editing and production.
- Awareness of new trends in video production and consumption, including drones, VR, 360, social media, streaming services like Netflix, etc.
- Fluency in English.

- Good knowledge of latest technical developments in broadcast/television industry and digital platforms.
- Strong contacts in international broadcast media and experience in production of humanitarian/refugee stories for broadcast an advantage.
- Fluency in Arabic or French.
