Criminal Justice Intern

Specific Assignment:

Under the overall supervision of the UNODC Regional Representative for the Middle East and North Africa and direct supervision of the Criminal Justice Programme Manager, the intern will gain first-hand knowledge and expertise in UNODC activities relating to crime prevention and criminal justice, and will contribute to the implementation of the following project(s): Improving the Criminal Justice Response to Violence against Women in Egypt (EGYZ33) and Further Enhancing the Rehabilitation and Reintegration Programme at the Institution for Young Male Offenders in Marg (phase out project) (EGYZ07).

Daily Assignments:

‒ Provide administrative support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., and follow up with participants to ensure attendance and contribution to the events, prepare background documents and presentations, handle logistics, etc.;
‒ Carry out basic research on selected aspects of the projects, operations and other activities to include data and other information gathered from diverse sources;
‒ Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. correspondence, draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.;
‒ Support activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and the preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.);
‒ As appropriate, liaise with relevant Headquarters' substantive Sections and Units for advice and input for project implementation;
‒ Contribute to situation assessment in UNODC mandate areas as required;
‒ Support the development of UNODC technical expertise and assistance, especially with regard to the development of new projects pursuant to national strategies and priority areas;
‒ As appropriate, provide support in the identification and contacts with the national counterparts, including governmental and non-governmental organizations;
‒ Support fund mobilization efforts undertaken by the Regional Office;
‒ Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Applicants should be enrolled in post graduate university or have completed a university degree no more than one year ago in, political and social sciences, international relations, law, marketing, public administration, or other relevant programmes relevant to the mandate of UNODC.

  • No professional experience is required.

  • Strong interest in working in the UN system, particularly on drug- and crime-related issues.

  • General IT competence and command of main office software programmes

  • Internet communication and searching skills

  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and a strong team working capacity

  • Languages: Excellent knowledge of Arabic and English with fluency in speaking, reading and writing. Working knowledge of French is an asset.
