Field Communications Officer (Fluency in Arabic and English)

MSF has been providing medical care to vulnerable populations in Egypt since 2010. Since 2011, MSF’s work in Egypt is supported by a communication professional in order to sensitise people and the media in the country, the region and beyond about humanitarian and medical issues that deserve attention. The responsibility of the Cairo Communication Officer will be to continue that work by developing a strong network of national, regional and international journalists based in Cairo and increase the visibility of MSF’s humanitarian principles and action. The position is closely linked to other communication resources in the region including the MSF MENA Communication Officer based in Beirut. The Field Communications officer will provide support and advise to MSF OCB’s teams managing operations in the region on their communication strategies and activities as well as contribute to MSF’s global awareness, acceptance and visibility.

Job Profile:

1.Develop strategy and coordinate communication needs and opportunities in support of OCB’s operational projects in MENA region

  • Closely monitor media in their reporting on issues relevant to MSF OCB projects, produce regular analysis out of such reporting and timely flagging of communications opportunities and risks for OCB operations in the region that may require support
  • In collaboration with the Combo Unit in Brussels, initiate and develop a coherent communication strategy in support of MSF OCB operations in the region
  • In collaboration with country teams, develop communication strategies and tools in support of local/national acceptance and visibility of MSF projects.
  • Profile MSF’s work, projects, and concerns on humanitarian crises in the region among regional and international media
  • Work closely with Country Managers, Combo, regional communication staff and the Humanitarian Innovation Team in order to identify and advise on themes/situations on which MSF should consider positioning itself publicly; support the development of dissemination strategies, messages and tools to ensure these positionings
  • Coordinate with regional field communication staff to ensure coherence, efficiency and impact of communication initiative in the region.**2.**Develop strategy and coordinate OCB communication needs and opportunities in support of MSF’s work in Egypt

2. Develop a network of local, regional and international journalists based in Cairo reporting on humanitarian issues

  • Increase the visibility, knowledge and understanding of MSF and its activities among the media and public audience in Egypt
  • Develop a network of local, regional and international journalists based in Cairo reporting on humanitarian issues
  • Support the MENA social media officer in Beirut in developing and implementing a social media strategy for MSF’s visibility and engagement with online communities with a specific focus on Egypt
  • Ensure adequate monitoring of media reporting on humanitarian, medical and migration related issues and MSF
  • Support MSF emergency activities in the country and operate as emergency communications officer as the need arises
  • In collaboration with the MSF Egypt team, develop an annual communication strategy/plan for MSF’s projects in Egypt
  • In collaboration with the MSF Egypt Head of Mission, develop appropriate communications initiatives and tools (leaflets, press releases, campaigns etc) to increase visibility and acceptance of MSF and its activities in Egypt
  • In collaboration with the Human Resources Specialist for MENA, initiate communications actions in support of MSF’s HR strategies in Egypt

3. Develop networks and the practical communication capacity to serve MSF OCB communication needs and ambitions in the region

  • In support to the ongoing work of other communication staff in the region, contribute to the development of a strategic network of local, regional and international journalists based in MENA countries, reporting on humanitarian issues
  • In coordination with existing MSF communication staff in Lebanon and in MENA contribute to the media monitoring of Arab media in order to identify risks and to advise on opportunities and relevant dissemination activities for getting MSF communications covered by national and regional media
  • Facilitate journalists’ field visits to MSF projects and pitch key issues / projects to journalists
  • Act as a spokesperson for MSF communications if need be
  • Coach MSF spokespeople and provide media training for any field staff dealing with the media in the region
  • Be available to act as emergency press officer and crisis info focal point during emergencies/crisis/incident in the region and facilitate journalists’ field visits to MSF OCB projects in the region
  • Provide information/data to the MSF communications network related to MSF operational projects and presence in the region
  • Develop relationships with networks of creative agencies, film makers, photographers, production companies and printing houses to support MSF's multi-media efforts in the region

Essential requirements

  • Previous working experience of at least 5 years in communications, journalism or public relations
  • Previous working experience in media management, coordinating communication strategies notably at time of emergencies/crisis and content production
  • Excellent knowledge of Arabic and international media networks in Cairo
  • Experience with MSF or other international NGOs
  • Key experience and interest in the MENA region and in humanitarian related matters;
  • Digital and social media skills
  • Fluency in Arabic and English (both spoken and written)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Knowledge of humanitarian work
  • Understanding of the importance of community acceptance and perception
  • Ability to work independently and report relevant information clearly and concisely
  • Excellent management and communication skills, outgoing personality, good representation
  • Excellent personal organisational ability
  • Flexibility to travel


  • Fluency in French is an asset
  • Previous experience in the humanitarian and /or associative sector
  • Photo and video skills
