The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 5000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs

Our Ideal Candidate:

We are seeking a motivated humanitarian professional to join our Jordan Country Office’s operations. They are a university graduate with at least 5 years’ experience managing projects for an international organization in an emergency setting.

We are particularly looking for an individual with strong project and people management skills to ensure high quality and cost effective programme/project implementation within the designated geographical area. They are a team leader with a proven history of successful representation; building and maintaining relationships with donors and partners.

Position Description:

The Area Manager position in NRC Jordan is effectively a Head of Operations role, overseeing the implementation of all NRC Jordan programmatic activities in the country across all field offices in five governorates of Jordan. The programmatic portfolio currently includes shelter and infrastructure activities in camps, shelter and WASH activities in host communities, distribution activities in camps in host communities, education and youth programmes in camps and host communities, livelihoods interventions and provision of information, counselling and assistance legal in host communities. The programmes are implemented by over 350 staff with a programmatic portfolio of ca. 30 million USD funded by multiple donors. The Area Manager is a member of the NRC Jordan Country Management Group.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  1. Provide efficient day-to-day management and support to project managers and coordinators in implementing approved programmes in line with agreed strategies, donor requirements and operational procedures
  2. Ensure that NRC programmes are implemented with strong beneficiary participation and in line with conflict sensitivity and do no harm principles while retaining high value for money and cost efficiency standards
  3. In close coordination and cooperation with the Head of Support oversee the development of support systems and procedures to ensure effective resource allocation, mobilization and control
  4. Ensure the growth and diversification of NRC’s programmatic response while retaining high quality of services delivered to NRC’s beneficiaries
  5. Participate in and contribute to the work of the Country Management Group
