The United National Children’s Fund (UNICEF), with its Headquarters in New York, NY is looking to engage consultants globally to present a proposal for supporting the new performance management culture in UNICEF as well as support the career development of staff. We are looking to engage consultants who are based in the seven (7) geographic regions in which UNICEF operates.

For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

Purpose of the Assignment

 Provide performance coaching and career counselling to staff and facilitate career management workshops 

Assignment Tasks

Over a period of ten months, beginning roughly in Feb 2017 and continuing until the end of the calendar year, the project will involve:

 

  1. Developing a plan for communication with each staff member, introducing themselves, sending pre-coaching material, and determining how the hour will best be spent with each individual.
  2. Executing at least one hour of telephone or Skype performance/career coaching with the staff member, which should be used towards mutually agreed upon goals (considering next steps, priorities for their search, refinement of their written application and/or interview skills, thinking through how to research other sectors, etc.).
  3. Following up as appropriate, after one session, [to measure progress, steps taken, where the staff member is] to ensure that the individual is taking action (via email). Send any appropriate web links or tips that may be useful.
  4. Preparing and submitting a final, short report, in agreed upon template, to DHR/PMCD detailing the number of individuals served, level, the nature of the session, any relevant trends observed, while maintaining appropriate confidentiality. This report would be due upon completion of any trip, and/or on a monthly basis. 
  5. Conducting face to face workshops in the relevant duty station and New York/HQ as needed.

Expected Deliverables

Coordinating with PMCD/DHR on timeframe and strategy, the individual will manage, coordinate, and offer performance and/or career counselling/coaching appointments to identified staff, which could include:

 

  • Contacting the individual(s) after a virtual introduction from PMCD/DHR to introduce oneself and set up the best mode of coaching (phone, in person, or Skype) [providing pre – coaching material, preparing for the session
  • Reviewing applications, PHPs, and providing interview support
  • Creating a strategy for a job search action plan
  • Providing a short synopsis to DHR/PMCD noting the staff members who took advantage of the service and the nature of support provided, keeping the appropriate parts of the conversations confidential

Qualifications of Successful Candidate

  1. Professional trainers and career development/performance management professionals with university degrees and/or certifications in human resources, career counseling, coaching.  
  2. A proven track record in international Human Resources, and in particular in performance management and career development/career transition.
  3. The ability to deliver the service with an excellent command of English and the relevant UN language for the region and or country of delivery.
  4. Familiarity or prior experience with the UN system, with UNICEF, or with a similar non-profit organization is considered an asset.
  5. Experience providing performance /career coaching and an understanding of the career fields in the areas of international development, international health, and emergencies is strongly preferred.
