Refusing to ignore people in crisis

Freetown Sierra Leone
Full time
Fixed Term 2 year contract

Do you have substantial overseas experience in the management and implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene promotion projects? If so an exciting opportunity has arisen to work on a new project in Sierra Leone.

This role is a chance to play a major role in the scale up of WASH infrastructure as well as training and awareness across 50 villages in four of the thirteen districts of Sierra Leone on a fixed term basis for 2 years.

The WASH PM will provide oversight and quality control of the water, sanitation and hygiene promotion component, and support SLRCS in programme implementation. The WASH PM will focus on WASH work within the four districts targeted by JOAC funding, but will also provide technical oversight and support in the remaining 9 districts.

This role has a dual focus in providing coaching, support and supervision to the SLRCS WASH Officer, providing both technical assurance for the quality of the project and ensuring that the project is delivered on time and to budget and target. Working alongside the SLRCS WASH Officer, this role will build on the lasting capacity of SLRCS, as the national humanitarian actor, to deliver quality WASH activities in villages after the life cycle of this project.

The WASH Project Manager (PM) will report to the BRC Country Manager, also based in Freetown, and will work closely with counterparts in SLRCS. The WASH PM will draw on the technical expertise from colleagues based at the BRC UK office in London. The SLRCS WASH Officer will be the key counterpart for the WASH PM.

The successful candidate will be a qualified Engineer with significant relevant humanitarian experience in the implementation of WASH projects. Proven management and leadership skills, coupled with specialist knowledge of WASH hardware, hygiene promotion approaches, community mobilization and contract management are essential. They will also have proven technical skills in supervising community based WASH projects and the ability to engage effectively with national staff members, volunteers and beneficiaries. Skills in training and developing staff are essential. They will have experience of risk assessment, project planning & budgeting, supervision and management at all stages of the project cycle, including monitoring and evaluation.

We are a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We enable vulnerable people at home and overseas to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help people recover and move on with their lives.
