Mission and objectives

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Somalia has been supporting the government’s efforts in effective implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP), which is aligned with the corporate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In support of development plans outlined in the NDP, UNDP in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders including government, multilateral agencies, private sector and civil society has been developing and implementing projects in its main thematic areas of Economic Growth and Employment, Democratic Governance, Rule of Law and Security, Human Development and Economics. These projects contribute towards achieving the overall national goal of socioeconomic transformation for poverty reduction, economic revival and societal transfer in a socially just and gender equitable manner.

Context

In 2021 UNDP’s Somali Women Media Project (SWoMP), created the country’s first all-women media team – Bilan Media – and continues to provide them with support to challenge adverse gender norms, open new opportunities for women in professional roles and bring new subjects to public debate. In addition, the project supports other women journalists in the Federal Member States as well as advocating more generally for women journalists’ workplace rights and against online harassment. In support of these efforts, UNDP seeks to engage a graphic designer to train women journalists on graphic design and create materials to promote the reporting of women journalists, the project’s results and better workplace treatment for women.

Task description

Under the overall authority of the SWoMP Project Manager, the Online Volunteer will provide: - Weekly training on graphic design using Canva and other online tools for Bilan media journalists and SWoMP project team members, with a focus on producing materials to complement and promote Bilan’s reporting, including data visualisation (training schedule to be worked out after discussion with project and trainees) - Ad-hoc guidance to Bilan journalists and project team members on graphic design - Creation of templates to promote Bilan Media’s reporting, such as quote cards for interviewees, adverts for upcoming talk-shows etc, in line with Bilan’s existing branding - Creation of promotional materials for Bilan media and the SWoMP project annual report and promotional and funding pitches, or as required. - Creation of advocacy materials calling for better workplace treatment of women in Somalia
